Filled with anxiety.

In about twenty-four hours I will officially be away from David and the kids for approximately the following thirty hours. I am going to a women's retreat at our church on Saturday and running through Sunday. Besides the fact that I have to arrive at an unthinkable hour of 7:30 AM, I am most nervous and anxiety-filled about leaving my babies (including my dear husband). I have NEVER left them overnight since they've been born. No, David and I have never been out on an overnight date since the kids have been born. A friend of mine couldn't believe this!

I am not really worried about the boys being taken care of or having tons of fun without me around, because I know they will. I am moreso sad for myself because I know how much I'll miss them! But, this retreat is so highly talked about by everyone I know who's done it so I am looking forward to this time for reflection and just to see what's in store for all of we women who are attending. I will hopefully come back to my family refreshed and a better wife and mother!

He’s already thinking about the loot.

Today Nathan began making up his own songs about M&Ms. It goes "1, 2, 3, 4.... M&Ms, M&Ms". While walking through the grocery store this evening to pick up milk, he began pondering out loud what different kinds of candy he would get for Halloween. We were each divulging our faves. He picked M&Ms, lollipops, Raisinets, Gummy Bears, and Dots. I told him I hope we get lots of Nerds, Hershey's kisses, candy corn, and more Nerds.

David already made a comment the other day about how we need to nail down a game plan so that we can be sure and stock up on the "good stuff" this year. Yeah, all this while we still have some Halloween loot sitting in our basement from last year.

I’ve got a groovy kid.

Nathan went for his dental checkup yesterday, with great anticipation on his part. It was an added bonus because we got to go just the two of us and have some chat time on the way there and back. So, we get to the dentist's office and N8 makes a beeline for the play area while I savor the moment to check my email on my phone. The staff was just getting back and ready to reopen (they close daily from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch) and N8 was their first patient up. The hygenist opened up the door into the waiting room and called, out, "Naaate?". At first, I didn't even react. I am not really used to anyone else calling him Nate other than family and close friends. But, when I finally realized they were asking for him, I was like, "oooh, c'mon Nathan, that's you!" Don't ask me why they took it upon themselves to call him Nate, but they did. Not that I don't LOVE that nickname, but it got a little irritating so I think I'll need to say something next time.

At any rate, we go into the exam room and N8 eagerly climbs upon the fancy beige dental chair and Ashlea (the hygenist) begins to have it recline back. At first, N8 gives me this look of "are you sure this is what it's supposed to be doing, mom?" and I reassuringly give him a smile. After giving me a look then telling me that Nathan looks SO much like me, Ashlea then asks N8 what flavor of paste and flouride polish he wants. He chooses cherry on both counts. For the record, last checkup it was cookie dough, I believe. My personal choice would've been the bubble gum. So, then he gets to put on the little kiddie sunglasses while Ash (yes, I am shortening her name since she shortened my son's) turns that bright overhead dentist light on and takes a peek at his pearlies. She then begins in with the cleaning and N8 performs like a champ, opening wide for brushing and closing his mouth for the spit sucker (a.k.a., Mr. Thirsty).

So, after finishing up with that we get to visit with Dr. Smith (the DDS). He's such a hoot for an old man. He and N8 somehow got on the subject of Beach Bums (where N8 had his birthday) and they were chatting about big kahunas, etc. So, back to the title of this post. Come to find out, N8 has a pit in his right lower back tooth. Dr. Smith assures me it's just the way his tooth formed and has nothing to do with how or what he eats. His teeth overall get a glowing review. Apparently, that particular tooth formed in an odd shape and Dr. Smith and Ashlea inform me that it's pretty consistent with Nathan's texture of the rest of his teeth. As Ashlea put it, "he's just really....groovy". I guess what she really meant was that his teeth are really groovy and edgy on the tops. So, as such, he'll need to go in next week to have a tiny sealant put on since they don't want to risk leaving it untreated and apt to decay over time.

By the end of the visit, N8 was walking out with a bag of loot! He got a groovy new toothbrush, stickers, skin sticker (tattoo), pencil, and floss. Overall, a great visit, and BONUS....we get to do this all over again next week!

Wet hands.

Will is teething so badly right now with all four molars. Yes, they're actually through the gumline but I guess are still pushing their way completely through. As such, he's been gnawing on his hands all. the. time. And, it's driving me batty.

Each time he reaches for me with his hands I twist away because I really don't want to get slobber all over my hair or clothes. Let's just hope these teeth hurry it up.

Silly, silly, silly.

One of Nathan's favorite things to say about his teacher is that she's so silly. This morning while getting ready to blow-dry my hair he tells me,

"Mommy, I am going to tell you the silliest sauce that Miss Jan said to us. It is just so silly it's going to make you giggle all over!"

I then replied, "What is it? What kind of sauce?" Then he says,

"UNDERWEAR sauce! Ha, ha, ha!"

The letter of the week for the class is "U" and each day they try and come up with an alternative to sitting "criss-cross-applesauce" based on a sauce that begins with the letter of the week. I guess his teacher was feeling brave saying the word "underwear" in a class of four year-olds.

Bring on the orange and black.

Nathan, Will and I have had great fun today bustin' out all of our Halloween decor! That's about the most fun part of the fall season for me. Luckily we have tons of great stuff from last year that I don't really need to buy much. I did, however, splurge on some candy corn and autumn mix for my candy dish today at Target.

It's fun to open up a box of decorating goodies and find things you'd forgotten about, like this spooky haunted house. Nathan's also got his Halloween costume all ready to go and now we just need to figure out what Will's going to be.

It's nice to have a festive feel in the house again, even if it IS with jack-o-lanterns and ghostly decor.

Garage sale surprise.

This afternoon after picking up Nathan from preschool we decided to check out a few garage sales in the neighborhood next to the school. Imagine Nathan's shock when he walked right up to the garage of one house only to find it was Ms. Jan's (his preschool teacher) house!

He kept going on and on about the tennis racquets she had there, wanting to know how much each one was. Then she had this cool little table hockey game that she and Nathan played on for about fifteen minutes. He even asked her at one point how much the game was, but I was not about to take that thing home with me. Yes, it did look very fun, but I think I'll croak if I try to cram even one more toy in this house.

Before leaving we ended up with a great little kid-sized snow shovel that was marked a buck. I reached for my bag to pay for it and Ms. Jan wouldn't hear of it! She told Nathan it would make her so happy to know that he was out shoveling snow this winter with their old shovel, so he should just take it. We thanked her and headed out.

Nathan was pretty pleased he managed to hold onto all of his garage sale money (like three bucks and change) AND still walked away with something to show.

Mr. Sandman

For the past two weeks since preschool's been in session, Nathan has come home EVERY DAY with sand in his shoes. And not just a little - a lot of annoying sand. Today just as I was buckling him in to the car from picking him up at school, he says to me that's he's got a few rocks and lots of sand in his shoes. Instead of emptying them out at home (like I've been doing) I decided to do it right then an there.

Boy am I glad I did. His shoes needed to be pounded so that all the sand came out and we removed his socks too and got all the sand out of his feet. There were three or four of those little pebble rocks in his shoes too which all thankfully got left behind in the preschool parking lot and not in my entryway.
