Introducing Clementine.

Here she is in all her glory.  Clementine is a happy and energetic little fish who is no doubt enjoying the her bubbly and colorful surroundings.  The kids are already warming up to her as they love to watch her swim about and point out that she waves to them with her rapid little fin moving around.  I'm not sure what the protocol with Bettas is with regard to adding other companion fish but I think we'll research it a little more before deciding to get her some fishy friends.  She's entertaining enough at this point!

A sad day.

This morning shortly after sitting down for breakfast, D went to feed our Betta fish, Fishy Red, only to find that the fish was gone.  Apparently he had leaped out of the bowl (again) and was lying seemingly lifeless on the back door kitchen rug.  Immediately D scooped him up with a napkin so the kids wouldn't have to see a dead fish lying there but as he went to pick up Fishy Red, it suddenly became apparent that he was still alive!  D then tossed him back into the water and Fishy Red began swimming around as if nothing at all had happened.

Unfortunately, that didn't last.  After D's mom came to pick up the kids for vacation bible school this afternoon, I started to notice that Fishy Red was in the bowl hanging vertically with his lips right up on the top of the water, as if he was struggling for oxygen.  He was like that for a good hour or two before he moved toward the bottom of the bowl and had his head semi-buried in the gravel and rocks at the bottom.  D and I began discussing that we didn't think he was going to make it and how we'd have to run out and get another fish before the kids came home so they wouldn't think anything had happened to their Fishy Red.  About another hour passed by and I noticed that he'd stopped breathing.  His little gills were no longer pulsating and he lay there at the bottom of the bowl, lifeless.  I was heartbroken.

I immediately told D we needed to go to the pet store to get another fish and a more appropriate tank before the kids came home and noticed.  D flushed Fishy Red down the toilet and we headed out for Petsmart.  It was then that we realized that we'd most certainly have to tell the kids what happened to their fish because there wasn't a single fish in the store that even remotely looked like Fishy Red.  After looking at all the different Bettas, I finally settled on one and D picked out a cool tank that goes great with the kitchen counter we keep the fish on and we headed home.

The kids came home at about 9:30 tonight and we told them about what had happened.  N took it quite well, but was mostly just interested in why fish don't live forever.  Both he and W were fascinated by the new counter top tank, complete with cover (no more leaping fish!) and a cool light switch that can be toggled off and on.  We told N he could decide on a name for the new fish and he thought about it for a while before exclaiming, "how about Clementine?"  It was perfect.  W's reaction to the new fish was "fishy....kyoot!"

I talked at length with N about how even though we'll never be able to replace Fishy Red, we will love and care for this new fish, Clementine, and will always remember Fishy Red and the special fish he was to our family.  The kids, especially N, had just gotten to a point where they'd come down almost everyday and check on Fishy Red and say hi to him, so I especially want them to embrace this new fish and bond with her too.  When N asked me why we couldn't simply buy another fish that looked exactly like Fishy Red, I used that as an opportunity to point out that it was impossible to do since God makes each and every creature unique and special.  N said he was sad that his fish had to die and it broke my heart to hear him say that because I know death is such hard concept for a kid that age to wrap their brain around.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring new smiles though, as they see Clementine swimming about in her new surroundings.  Jeez, this parenting gig is truly tough!

Not to toot my own horn, but.....

Despite the kids being away at vacation bible school this evening with D's mom, I decided I'd make dinner for my wonderful hub and I because I've been wanting to try out this great new recipe for an Easy Mexican Casserole.  I know - being a Latina, I should be ashamed of myself for even looking for a recipe for such a thing but truth be told, I wasn't looking for it.  It just appeared as I was browsing around looking at other recipes.

I'm so thrilled to report that the casserole was a hit and D and I really enjoyed it!  It's actually a good thing the kids weren't here to partake in the meal because this is how much was left:

I did make a few mods to the original recipe though, which I think made it so yummy!

  • I added some taco seasoning and garlic powder and cumin to the meat mixture so the meat wasn't so bland.
  • I left out the olives, as neither D nor I care for them.
  • I left the tortilla chips whole instead of crushing them which gave the casserole a very nacho-like quality.
  • I also served a side of guacamole with it which was SO freakin' delish!
  • I only left the casserole in the oven for about fifteen minutes instead of the recommended thirty.  D and I were starving!

Even as a self-proclaimed bad cook, I actually think a new blog category, Cooking, may be in order for me.

I love friends.

Why do I love friends?  Because of the things they do for you.  Nina and I have recently been in search of Siggs for our kids and today while out shopping, she came upon a slew of them at one of my favorite stores.  Not only was she nice enough to walk all the way to the front of the store to borrow a phone book to look my phone number up to call and ask me if I wanted her to pick a couple up for us, but she also sent me a great little shot of their selection.  What a friend!

Perfect day for rain.

Although it's been rainy and gloomy all day long, it couldn't be more perfect.  This morning the kids and I had a playdate at our new favorite hangout.  Not only did they get some great playtime with new friends, but I got to engage in real-life conversation with other local moms!  It was a win/win!

W had fun with his new friend!

N playing TAG! of course!

The place was full of fun play areas and the kids had a ball.  Aftwards, I treated them to an apple juice from the juice bar.  I knew that we were going to be having lunch at D's mom's house so normally I would've just had them wait till we got there to have a drink, but their heads were super sweaty (ewww!) and the juice was only a buck!

They'll be with their ahma (Chinese word for Grandmother) for the rest of the day and then she'll be taking them to her church's Vacation Bible School which starts this evening.  Hmmmm.....maybe D will take me out for dinner?  Hey, it could happen.

My balancing act.

We played a lot of Wii Fit this wiikend.  Check out the lovely photo that my wonderfully photojournalistic husband managed to snap of me while trying to play a game on the Wii Fit balance board.  I swear, I'll probably break my neck one of these days, but at least the kids get a kick out of it!

Dragon Boat Festival

Today I took the boys for a stroll down on the Plaza.  Since one of Kansas City's hot spots, I figured I needed to start acquainting them with their hometown and all that it has to offer.  They really enjoyed seeing all the fountains and water everywhere.  But, what we specifically went down there for was for the fourth annual Dragon Boat Festival.  Of course, the kids totally pictured this festival like the one that was shown during a recent episode of Ni-Hao Kai Lan.  I had to explain to them that the weren't actually going to be in the dragon boat races, but they would at least be able to watch them.  Little did I know that the festival would actually have land races that the kids could participate in.  Nathan's team slaughtered their opponents.

It was so hot outside but the kids were enjoying themselves so much.  They got to make these cool little Chinese Word Books that will help them practice writing and saying Chinese words and symbols.

There were lots of other cool hands-on activities for them to do like make their own medallion and their very own origami dragon boats!

I think they mostly just liked hanging out and playing with everything at the festival though.  We'll definitely be going back next year!

Five things.

In this week's edition of Five Things here are five things that W has picked up from big brother N.  Some of these drive me crazy, while others make me laugh.

  • Saying "fine!" after I ask him to do something he is reluctant to do.
  • Saying "DUUUHH!" at the most random times!
  • Saying "awww, mannn!"  when something appears to be messed up, broken, or inoperable.
  • Asking "shineey?" while showing me his teeth after brushing them.  A yes means he can stop brushing while a no means brush more.
  • Saying "Asem dude!", translated as "awesome, dude!" after anything and everything that makes him happy.

Mini Farmer's Market.

Today on the way back from N's violin lesson, we spotted a very small but quaint Farmer's Market that had set up shop on one of the busy roads of a nearby neighborhood.  It was just N and I in the car so I decided that it wouldn't be too chaotic keeping up with just one kid since W was at D's mom's house.

We walked right up and instantly the sweet smell of cantaloupe hit my senses and I knew I would just have to have one.  I made my way around and looked at their many offerings like homegrown tomatoes, sweet spanish onions, zucchini, and of course, fresh corn.  Even though I wanted at least one of everything, in the end I settled for one juicy cantaloupe.  N had made his way around onto these wooden bleacher seats then yelled at me from them that I needed to come take his picture.  I told him I didn't have my camera but then I remembered my phone takes pretty good pics.  You be the judge....

Growing dinosaurs.

Today the kids and I made use of some of the goodies I picked up a while back at the Target dollar spot.  They were these little capsules that you put into warm water and let sit for a few minutes until finally they turn into fun foamie dinosaurs.  The boys had fun doing one of every color capsule.  N kept wanting a napkin to wipe off the goo that slid off into the water from the capsule shell.  W kept trying to drink the glass of water.  Luckily, I was onto his every move and he was able to take no for an answer.
