One last hurrah!

Tonight we took the kids to Chuck E. Cheese's as a surprise before N heads to Pre-K on Tuesday.  The kids had a blast.  I ended up running into a friend from church so that was nice.  Other than that we enjoyed the pizza, games and of course getting to turn in all of our tickets for prizes.

We're not Irish, but no one noticed.

I took the kids to Irish Fest today and we had such a great time.  The kids got to get their faces painted, jump on bounce houses, be part of a cool concert, and eat some yummy food!  They split a fresh squeezed cherry lemonade and some hot kettle corn.  They also each got a yummy slushie and we all munched on a warm funnel cake!  Notice there are no pics of the food....we ate it all too fast!

We saw a bit of the performance by Jim Cosgrove and N was even picked out of the audience to be in the band!

W just loved all the great festival food!

Five Things: Labor Day Weekend

Although I never take a day off as a mom (as I am sure many of you can relate to), I am looking forward to a few good things this weekend.

  • I am finally getting a much needed - and deserved - haircut and color.  I am excited to try out the LifeSpa at the gym.  Ironically, the last time I got a haircut was on Memorial Day weekend.  I am sensing a pattern here.
  • I'll be volunteering at Irish Fest tonight and then taking the kids there on Saturday morning, providing they cooperate so we can make it out the door.  I've never gone to the festival before but I totally know it will be a blast.  I'm not Irish though, so maybe they'll be selling "Kiss Me Even Though I'm Not Irish" t-shirts.
  • I am hopeful we can make it to the swimming pool one last time before they all shut down for the summer.  The kids will like it and I want to soak in every bit of sun that I can because I know the winter blues are looming up ahead.
  • Enjoying our final weekend before N goes off to Pre-K.  I have a few more surprises in store for him as we continue with our countdown to back-to-school.
  • Sitting, doing nothing.  I rarely get the opportunity to do that and since we're light on scheduled events here in the T household, I'll hopefully be doing a lot of nothing.

What's on your agenda for this holiday weekend?

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

We're getting ready!

N is getting quite excited about starting Pre-K next week.  We began our countdown earlier this week with a cool countdown paper chain that N gets to take a link off of each day as we get closer.  And I'm sure we'll end up having one last hurrah this Labor Day weekend before he heads of for his final year of preschool.

Yesterday we had his preschool orientation and he got to meet his teacher and some of his classmates.  He also received a short note in the mail from his teacher which stated that they will have a great time with sand and water, painting, and learning about insects.

I am not sure how W and I will manage day-to-day without N since he'll be gone Monday through Friday.  I know I'll miss the heck out of him!

If you can't find me, I'm in the dungeons of my basement coding software.

I hate very much dislike tech support of any kind.  I've recently been tinkering with some software I am looking to upgrade to that will bring major changes to my website that I am so psyched about.  The downside of that though is that I need like a week un-interrupted to hash out all the coding, configuring, and customizing that needs to be done to make it a smooth transition.

The software company I am working with claims that they have 24/7 tech support and rapid response to support tickets.  Well, instantaneous is not fast enough for me.  I am an impatient person.  Anyway, I've succumbed to the notion that I will just have to drag out this whole revamping my website project much longer than I wanted to.

It's only a matter of time.

Recently I've been telling N to "act your shoe size, not your age!" when his behavior is less than acceptable.  I am not looking forward to the day I have to actually declare that as an opposite statement because that will mean he's getting bigger!  He's such a great helper to me in ways I never thought possible!

It's even enjoyable at times to be out and about with him.  Like today.  We had a little extra time before his group violin lesson so we stopped by the place where I get my daily planner page refills to see if they had pages for 2009 (which, of course, the didn't).  The point is though, that I sort of even forgot he was with me while the store clerk and I chatted a bit about when I could check back with them.  Then, N and I enjoyed looking at some cool little organizational accessories and gadgets together before leaving.

It's nice to have a kid who sometimes acts his shoe size!  Makes things a whole lot easier!

Friends & Fondue.

Tonight I enjoyed a fun night out with a few local moms for some tasty treats!  We celebrated Ladies Night at Melting Pot.  I hadn't been there since the time I took my sister there and it was just as good as I remember it.

We got a steal of  a deal - two martinis (or selected wines), cheese fondue, and chocolate fondue all for $22!!  It was so delish and I'll definitely be counting the days till we return.  Apparently every Monday night is Ladies Night.  I could SO get used to this!

Declining industry.

I had an appearance this morning on KCTV 5 news, a station I actually had not been to before today, and I totally learned about something I never thought would actually happen.

You know how when you watch the news and you see the anchors there, looking into the camera lens rattling off reports? Well, don't you often think that there's a camera crew of some sort behind that camera, making sure everything goes off without a hitch?  Nuh-uh!

I was scheduled to arrive for my live interview today at 9:15 a.m. even though I wouldn't be on until 9:50 a.m., so they had me all prepped, mic attached, and just hanging out in the studio.  I was literally just a few feet from the anchors' desk where they filmed.  The whole time I kept thinking how that would annoy me - having to do the news while someone sat there, facing me, while I stared into the camera.

Well anyway, back to the camera thing....what surprised me the most about the whole station experience was that there were literally no camera men [or women] to be found.  Anywhere.  The cameras were all robotic-like moving around on their own at various times during commerical breaks or while one anchor was talking, another one would move to a different desk and the R2D2-like camera would glide on over and get into position.

Other than myself, the weather guy and the two anchors, there was literally no one else in the studio. I found that so ODD!  I remember back in the day when our school took us on a field trip to visit the local news station.  I remember seeing camera men maneuvering the cameras and setting up to get the shots just right.  I guess this is a field that probably isn't all that great to get into now, seeing as how they are being replaced by robotic cameras!  The whole experience was a trip for me.  But, it was cool being on TV again!

Stinky Saturday.

Today the kids and I went to Mr. Stinky Feet's 10 year anniversary celebration down at the Plaza library.  We were all super excited to be going to help Jim celebrate.  We were the first ones in line!

The show was incredibly awesome and the kids and parents were having a ball.  Jim had his entire family, including parents, sister in-laws, nieces, etc., go up on stage so he could thank them for their support over all these years.  The turnout was so great that even his cute little wife, Jeni, was all choked up.  They're such great people that I am so happy to know and be connected with.

Jim was great at playing all of the fan favorites from his albums and several from his new album.  In fact, he opened up the hour-long concert with N's favorite tune, Scribble.  In true Stinky Feet fashion, he also had kids come up from the audience to help him out and be in his band.  It was such a great time for everyone!  Then, he took his guitar and sang his way through the audience, going all the way to the back of the auditorium and making his way back up again.  At the end of the show he took requests and N got to have his request heard - Jim sang Seven Holes in My Head, N's other favorite tune from the Upside Down album.

Even my friend, Kevin, a.k.a., Dino O'Dell was there to rock out as Jim's guest and help play on a couple of hits.  And, Jim was having a great sale on all of his merchandise so the kids got new Stinky Feet t-shirts which they insisted on wearing during the concert!

Five Things: Before I was a mom, I never thought I'd:

  1. Be brave enough to stick my hand inside my kid's diaper only to confirm that, yes, he had in fact taken a poop.
  2. Be jumping at the chance to finish the half-eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cold toast that my kids left behind, because it was the only small chance I had at eating something all day.
  3. Get so wrapped up in party-planning and have more fun than my kids at picking party stuff out.
  4. Worry so much about stereotypes and how much my kids are exposed to them.  It's a constant battle for me to steer clear of stereotypes and to make sure my kids see everything as fairly as possible.
  5. Feel so loved by another human being.

If you're a mom, what do you find most surprising about motherhood?  If you're not yet a mom, what do you think will be your biggest challenge if/when that time finally comes?
