I hate coffee but I'm Starbucks' newest fan!

Yesterday morning started out as usual - hectic!  I woke up at 6:30 a.m. and went in to get the kids up and dressed for school while the baby was still asleep.  After helping them change their clothes, brush teeth, etc. we headed downstairs so that I could make breakfast.  Thankfully, school lunch was pizza so Nathan wanted to buy lunch instead of take.

I fixed waffles and scrambled eggs for Nathan & Will and spent the next few minutes getting backpacks and bags ready for school, packing snack, etc..  Rarely do I ever find time to eat breakfast with the kids and this day was no exception.  At 7:28 a.m. we hopped into the car and headed for school.  After dropping Nathan off, I headed back home to quickly shower and dress and nurse Jacob before heading of to drop Will off at preschool.  Still, no breakfast for me.

After dropping Will off at 9, I was headed over to church for our bible study group meeting but realized I was freakin' starving by this time!  I wanted to grab something fast since I had to meet everyone at 9:15 but I was in NO WAY going to get a McDonald's breakfast!  I had to think fast.

Now, anyone who knows me well knows that I a) hate coffee but love soda b) think Starbucks is highly overrated and rarely go there.  This was all about to change (well, except for the hating coffee part).

I reluctantly decided to head through the drive-thru at Starbucks since I actually do like a nice cup of Chai Tea or hot chocolate occasionally.  Plus I figured I could pick up a nice slice of banana-walnut bread and that would tide me over until lunch.

So I pull up into the line (which is nearly out of the parking lot long!) and patiently wait to order.  As I roll my window down to yell my order out, I am greeted by the nicest voice.  After ordering a tall Chai and my bread, she asks me, "is there anything else, sweetheart?".  How nice! I smiled.  I kindly replied that I had ordered all I needed to and she thanked me and told me she would have my total at the window.

In the meantime while waiting to get to the pick-up window, I got on my phone and tweeted about how kind she'd been and the great service I received.  I had no idea how much better it was all about to get.

I finally pull up to the pick-up window and see the barista getting my order ready, so I reached for my wallet, opened it up, and found that my debit card was missing. GASP!  I immediately traced my whereabouts in my own head and realized that that last place I used it was at 7-11 to get gas the day before.  Normally when I get gas, I slip my card into my back jeans pocket but it was miserably cold the day before so I was wearing a coat.  Oops.  Must've put the card in my coat pocket instead of back in my wallet.

I kindly peeked my head outside my car window and told the barista that I just realized I misplaced my card and that I had three dollars in cash so if she could just not worry about my bread since I didn't have enough to pay for it.  What happened next surprised the heck out of me!

She turned, looked at me and said, (and with a smile, no less!) "Oh, no, I tell you what, this is going to be our treat today!"

I looked at her in shock and said, "No, no, I HAVE three dollars...let me just pay for the tea."

She then informed me that I was not to argue with her on the matter, that it was their "policy" and that the next time I came in, they would be delighted to have me back!

Was this a joke??  Apparently not.  She handed me the bag containing my bread and then handed me my drink.  She told me she hoped I would find my card and to have a great day.  I left stunned, but happy!

So I am telling you all this story not because I want the kindness of Starbucks' employees to be taken advantage of, rather because I think it speaks volumes to the fact that despite what kind of economy we are in, there are still companies out there wanting to do good by the people. That barista's kindess, sympathy and attitude was so refreshing, yet unexpected.  She didn't have to call me sweetheart.  She didn't have to give me my order and wish me well on my way.  But the fact that she did has made a tremendous impact on my whole viewpoint of the company.  It's just too bad I don't like coffee.  But, I will be back for the tea and bread!  If you love Starbucks, why not join their fan page on Facebook here?

Formula Fed America:: The debate continues.

I recently learned of a new movie, Formula Fed America,  debuting soon about the effect that baby formula has had on our nation's children and their overall health.  I have to admit that as a breastfeeding mother I am more than just interested in seeing it.  While I personally believe that breastfeeding IS the superior infant food (I am a card carrying La Leche League member), I feel like the message this movie might be trying to send may be diminished by the divisiveness it creates.

It seems there is always some battle between moms who choose breastfeeding and moms who don't or can't for other reasons.  While I do believe that not enough is being done in medical facilities to promote breastfeeding, I don't like the idea of moms against each other, guilting one another about their choices.  A mom is a mom, is a mom.  We all have the same struggles.

I will just say this though - it irritates the hell out of me how quick doctors and medical professionals are to suggest formula to babies just because a mother is struggling with breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding is a conscious choice that a mother must make if they want to be successful.  For me, personally, I had it in my mind that there WAS no "Plan B".  If my kid was going to eat, he would have to be breastfed.  But I am a seasoned mom.  What about new moms?  At their first sign of struggle, doctors often force the issue of giving the baby formula instead of vigilantly trying to make breastfeeding successful.

This movie claims it will address how "human milk has evolved" and how "formula is directly related to the obesity problem in this country".  I am most interested to see how the film will elaborate on these issues and not necessarily that one cannot be a good mother if they do not breastfeed.

So what are your thoughts?  Do you plan on seeing this movie?

Decorating the tree.

This year we busted out our Christmas decorations a bit early.  The kids have been bugging me for weeks about the tree.  We finally got it put up and some of the other stuff is making its way around the house too.

I've got some fun new traditions I'll be implementing with the kids this year and will share them soon! Happy Holidays!

Another trophy for the mantle.

Last night was Nathan's flag football end-of-season party at his coaches house.  It was tons of fun and the best part? Nathan walked away with a fab football trophy!

He now has soccer, violin, t-ball, and football trophies showcased in his bedroom.  I must put up that wall shelf I bought several weeks ago so that he's got a place to keep them while showing them off.

Flag football was a blast (for both kids and parents!) and a great learning experience for the kids who played.  I have to say I think I may have been one of (if not THE) loudest parents at the games.  This last game they played was at a high school stadium and brought back memories of good 'ol high school football Friday nights and me cheering for my (then) boyfriend - now husband!

I know now why God has blessed me with three boys.  I am bound to get a football player out of one of them.  Jeez, how big would I be smiling then??!!

Is Shouting the New Spanking?

Juice Box Jungle recently posted some info about spanking being replaced by shouting in today's families.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.  Have I ever spanked my kids?  Yes.  Do I think I'm a monster because of it?  No.  Do I regret it?  No.

Honestly, I feel ten times worse after shouting or screaming at my kids than if I'd just pulled them into their room and explained to them their punishment, then spanked them on their bottoms.  I know, I know, this isn't going to sit well with all or most of you, but I'm just being honest here.

I grew up in a very loving home that also included discipline by form of spanking. Not always, but certainly when times called for it.  Do I think my parents were wrong or bad because of it?  Not at all.  I turned out VERY well-rounded and led a completely normal childhood.  Not to mention, I'm Hispanic so I have to believe in spanking!  Ha, just joking....that was completely intended for George Lopez to read!

But seriously, I think too many times people lose sight of the fact that there is a HUGE difference between spanking and beating a child.  Check out the video on this topic below and give me your thoughts.

Pumpkin Patch, Halloween, & Texas Football!

We couldn't have picked a colder day to take the kids to the pumpkin patch...seriously!  It was so windy and chilly but we had a great time and pretty much had the place to ourselves too!

Pumpkin carving was of course in order as well.  The boys enjoyed drawing their faces on while Grammy & I helped with carving.

Then, it was time for the goblins to come out!  My skeleton boy, Super Mario, and Boo! The Baby Ghost were ready for trick-or-treating!  Ok, in all honesty, Jacob didn't actually go out....he got tricked and got to stay home with Grammy - the Witch!

And then it was time for Longhorn Football while we dug into the mounds of candy.  Of course, we won - big time! What a night! Hook 'Em Horns!

I love than Nathan's mouth is so stuffed with candy that he can't even show his teeth while smiling!
