My little guys are still a ways off from that milestone of getting their drivers licenses. My oldest who is 10, however, is always eagerly asking questions about driving, cars on the road, and laws. Driver safety and education is something that we definitely discuss on a regular basis and I try hard to not make it too preachy. I mostly just share about what a big responsibility and treat it is t be behind the wheel. The other day my son asked me if citizens are subjected to regualar testing after becoming licensed. We talked also about how in our state, you must be 17 years old to be eligible for a drivers license.
I've recently learned that State Farm has developed a program, Celebrate My Drive, which aims to educate and share with teens about driver safety, rather thatn rely on scare tactics.
One of the most alarming statistics about young drivers today is that in the U.S., 16-19 year-olds are nearly three times more likely to die in a fatal car crash than rivers who are 20 years-old older. Sixteen and 17 year-olds are at the highest risk of a crash, nearly twice as likely to crash as 18 and 19 year-olds.
That is an ALARMING statistic! For years, State Farm has made it their mission to do what they can to protect teen drivers, since they know that the number one killer of teens is car crashes. Through programs like
Celebrate My Drive and continued work towards stronger laws, enforcement, education,
and awareness, State Farm is taking working hard to educate and in turn, save lives.
One interesting survey finding that I came across is that teens who refrain from texting while driving were much more likely to report having frequent talks with their parents about safe driving. Sixty-seven percent of teens who admit to texting while driving said they often talk with their parents about driving, in contrast to 82% of teens who don’t text and drive. What this means is that we, as parents, need to now more than ever, keep a dialogue open with our kids about save driving practices. State Farm's Celebrate My Drive program does just that.
