School was canceled today for my older two kids and although our day's high was just -9 degrees, we still did manage to have some fun staying indoors ALL day long.
William had been BEGGING me since the weekend to reach out of the back door onto the deck and grab some snow to make snow cones. I kept putting it off and putting it off because, well, I value being able to feel my toes and don't much care for going out into the cold to scoop up snow.
But today, as I was cleaning up after serving the kids lunch, I could see a glimmer of the sun peek its way into my kitchen window (which looks out onto our back deck) and I decided that I'd surprise the kids with their snow cone treats. So, I reached for my glass Pyrex bowl and a scoop and schlepped on my snow boots and let myself out the back door.
The kids never even noticed I'd slipped out. They were too busy playing with the new Disney Infinity game Santa brought. So, I was able to scoop out some snow for each of them and then busted out my slushy syrups. All we had left from this past summer were Cherry, Cotton Candy, and Root Beer. After calling the boys all into the kitchen for their snowy treats, they all managed to choose Cherry and then they went to town eating the unseasonable snowy goodness.
I did manage to have a taste from one of their bowls and thought it wasn't half bad! It shocked me that they finished nearly ALL of their servings. But then they all proceeded to head for the couches and reached for the throw blankets. Tomorrow, we're in for a high of 30 degrees which sounds like a heat wave around here! This will likely begin melting some of the white powder so I'm glad we were able to check off snow cones from our winter list of fun things to do. I love making memories out of everyday moments like these with my kids! So, take THAT, snow!
Your turn: Have you been snowed in yet this season? Have you ever made treats or goodies with the snow?
Great idea! Even better on hot days if you could somehow get the snow then!
