A family name is something that evokes a sense and feeling of pride when shared by the members it represents. For my own kids, although they carry my husband's Asian surname, they are well aware of their special familial ties to the Latino community and Hispanic culture. Being proud of my Hispanic roots is something that I have always been passionate about passing along to my kids. Probably mostly due to the fact that my father was insanely passionate about the same.
Growing up, I remember how my dad would always tell me and my siblings how we needed to be PROUD of who we were and what our family came from. Family pride is one of the legacies he leaves behind. Of course, as kids, we were always like "yeah, ok, whatever Dad," but looking back, I am so very grateful for the feeling of pride he pushed us to recognize. I'm so glad he was the kind of dad that always proudly proclaimed he was a "Suniga", and now I do, too. It's because of him that I'm comfortable in my own skin. I'm so proud to be a strong, Latina, "Suniga" woman. Yes, I carry my husband's last name as my married name, but nothing will change the family pride I have carry with me...all the way down to my Hispanic roots.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, Coca-Cola is dedicated to making Latinos feel prouder than ever about their heritage by celebrating one of their biggest sources of pride and evidence of heritage—their last name. Coca-Cola recognizes that Latino’s last names are a source of pride, and is inviting families to visit them online to purchase a Share a Coke contour bottle personalized with their last names to share that pride with the world.
My Suniga side of the family just recently had a family reunion. I know that if my father was still alive, he would have been the first to encourage everyone to attend and celebrate with their fellow family members. In the end, after all, all you have is your family to count on when you need it most. The new Coca-Cola contour bottle personalized with your family's name would be such a fun thing to bring to a family reunion or other family gathering as a way to celebrate your Hispanic heritage and Latino pride.
