Bad smells in your home can really ruin the atmosphere that you are trying to create. Instead of an inviting, relaxing place to be, your home becomes very unpleasant. You don’t want to invite guests around either because it can be quite embarrassing if your home smells particularly bad. It’s so frustrating when you’ve tried everything and you just can’t get rid of that lingering smell, but if you can find the source of the odor, you can get your home smelling fresh again in no time. These are some of the most common causes of bad smells in the home.
Cooking Smells
When you cook, the smell can stick and over time, it will build up and cause an unpleasant odor. This is a particular problem if you are cooking strong smelling things like fish, or frying things regularly because you will get a grease smell. The key to dealing with cooking smells is good ventilation. You need to make sure that you have an extractor fan running in the kitchen whenever you cook, and leave it on for a little while afterward to get rid of the smell. Opening the windows will help a lot as well.
Blocked Drains
If you get a bad smell around the bathroom or the kitchen, there’s a good chance that it might be a blocked drain. It’s important that you deal with this quickly because it’s not just the smell that you have to worry about. A blocked drain could also cause problems with damp and water damage in the home. The good news is, if you call a local blocked drains specialist, they will be able to sort it out easily. You can avoid blocked drains in the future by being more careful about what you put down the sinks and toilets.
Pets
If you have pets in the house, they can be a source of bad smells. When animals like dogs get dirty, they smell bad and if they’re running around the house, they will spread that odor all over the place. Unfortunately, you can’t avoid it completely, but you can reduce the smell. It’s important to stay on top of their hygiene and make sure that you are bathing pets on a regular basis. This should help to reduce the smell, but if you have pets, it’s something that you need to accept to some extent.
Dirty Appliances
People often assume that appliances like dishwashers and washing machines just clean themselves as you run them, but that isn’t the case at all. In fact, bacteria builds up over time and they can get mold and mildew growing inside them. That will cause a strong damp smell in your home. Dishwashers are particularly bad because you get a lot of old food clogged up in there, which is why it’s important to take the filters out and clean them every now and again. You can also get cleaning tablets for washing machines and dishwashers. Regular cleaning will help you make your appliances last longer and you will be able to get rid of that smell as well.
If you have a bad smell in your home and you can’t work out where it’s coming from, there is a good chance that one of these things could be the cause.
