I'm a busy mom who used to love to read. But TBH, the days just slip away now that my family is so busy. Between working from home, running kids to soccer, baseball, dance, etc., then meal planning, cleaning, the list goes on - I haven't read a book in I don't know how long.
Recently, I found out that Jessica Simpson's new book, Open Book, was available at my local library. And via audiobook, no less! So, I did a quick checkout online and started listening the next day.
I've always been a fan of hers. Not like super die-hard but more of like in a "cheerleader" way. A fellow Texas gal, I've been rooting for her since she first became a celebrity. She seemed sweet, down-to-earth, and driven. I never fell into the common opinions of her that suggested she's dumb. She has always seemed smart, quick, and on-trend. So, I was super excited to dive into her memoir. With no expectations....just me having something to listen to as I shuffle kids around, playing taxi driver everyday of my life.
But wow, was I blown away! As I mentioned, I've always been a Jessica fan. But now, I'm dubbing her as the People's Celebrity. She gets so real in this book, y'all. I can't tell you how many times I sat in my car in the garage not wanting to get out because I couldn't stop listening to her read off, chapter by chapter, the ups and downs she's faced both before she was in front of cameras, and after. She's not filling the pages of this book with useless gossip and whatnot. This is HER story. I can't believe some of the painful life events she endured as a young girl. My heart completely goes out to her.
But what makes her the People's Celebrity? She is completely relatable. She talks about her fears and (mostly perceived) shortcomings as a mother, and how she's just trying to do what we all are - the best we can with what we've got. She talks about wanting to make a difference in this life. Isn't that what we all want? We all want to feel like we're doing God's work and something important to benefit the human species.
Jessica's real, raw retelling of her life's story is so inspirational (and yes, funny at times), that I feel like she's talking just to me as I listen. Of course, I'm not delusional. I know that's not true. But, I know that she hasn't forgotten where she came from. Or the people who have continued to follow her along her journey and root her on.
So, Jess, if you're reading this - know that I'm proud of you. I'm proud and in awe on behalf of ALL moms that you have so much faith and courage to be who you are without any apologies. Cheers to you. And to the amazing life that the People's Celebrity is living!
