Your living room plays a big part in the overall feel of your home. In most cases, it’s the biggest room and most central part and when having guests over you will spend many hours in it. For this reason alone you want it to feel welcoming and for people to leave feeling positive about the time they have spent in it - the last thing you want is to dread when people come over as you find your living room an uninviting space.
Updating your living to feel more welcoming is easily done, in fact, there are many different changes that you can make to enhance the space. Custom blinds can make a big difference in the windows if you haven’t replaced them in a long time. Ensuring the room smells nice can make it more inviting - candle gift sets are great for this as you can rotate the candles around - and add warmth and colour to the walls to break up empty spaces.
To help you with making your living room feel more welcoming, we have put the following guide together.
Update your wall space
When was the last time you made a change to the wall in your living room? Wall space is always a great place to start as so much can be done to make a room feel more welcoming. You can add pictures to the wall so share some of your favourite memories. Alternatively, you could add some artwork as this adds colour and a bit of your own personality. If you want to steer away from pictures and paintings, adding a mirror is another alternative. Mirrors make a room feel bigger, add light and come in many shapes and sizes, helping you fit it on any wall. Pinterest is a great place to look when after some inspiration on what to do with your wall space. A lot of interior designers will share their work there.
Do you have a rug?
Another go-to for a lot of people when trying to make a space more welcoming is to add a rug to the room. Rugs are great as they feel up empty spaces within a room, they add colour and come in different shapes. Some people like to rotate their rugs to the time of the year, this way the room is constantly getting updated and has a different feel to it. Whether your flooring is laminate, carpet or marble, rugs work on all surfaces. They also work well to hide any stains or damages to the flooring - a great money saver.
How does the room smell?
When you walk into your living room, how does it smell? Does it have a comforting smell to it or nothing at all? Room sprays, candles and reed diffusers are all great at adding a pleasant smell to a room, helping it feel more welcoming. The smell of a room has a big impact on how people perceive the room - just like wearing perfume or aftershave does on a person - a bad-smelling room can give a negative experience whereas a nice-smelling room people will remember and talk about.
Plants, plants plants
Plants are incredible! They do so much to the interiors of a room. They can add colour, they can make a space look bigger, break up any gaps and are very affordable. There are so many different plants that you can purchase - all coming in different colours and styles. In most cases, you don’t realise plants are used in a home but when paying attention you realise a lot of people have them. When you are next at a family member's or friend's house, take a look around and see if they use any plants in their living room.
Accessories
Accessories are always needed in the room to stop it from looking bare and feeling empty. Most of the time they are used to dressing a room and adding some style to it. There are so many different types of accessories that you can buy to make your room feel more welcoming - picture frames, crystals, plants, candles, clocks, coasters - the list goes on. Our advice would be to go to your local homeware store and see what accessories they have that you can use. You can place them on your coffee table, your console table, your TV unit, your side table and more.
