If you’re lucky enough to have a garage, you’ll know just how easy it is for it to fill up with things that you don’t know where to put. What was initially a great space for your car or your tools soon becomes completely overrun with unnecessary items as if it’s a junk/store room. Too often, this can happen when you haven’t got a proper storage system in place or when you just don’t know what to do with the space. In this article, we look at a few things you can do to upgrade your garage and make it a really useful space.

Have a clear out
When it comes to making your garage a useful space, one of the first things you should do is consider how you can make storage that is actually useful. If you have overflowing shelves and boxes, it can cause everything to be cluttered together and you can’t find anything. Then in your attempt to find what you’re looking for, you can make it even more of a mess. The first thing you should do is have a big clear out, getting rid of anything that doesn’t add any value or that you don’t ever use. Remember to try and recycle what you can, or see if you can make some extra cash by listing it on local selling pages.
Implement proper storage
Once you’ve got rid of your clutter and useless items, it’s time to arrange proper storage so you can find everything. Invest in a number of storage boxes which you can then sort your items between. Make labels that you can stick to the front and you will know exactly what belongs in which box. You could also get other storage such as drawers and hang rails depending on what it is you’re storing. No matter what storage you opt for, you want to find something that works for you and that is easy to keep tidy and neat. Look online for some inspiration, there’s so many things you can choose between.
Turn it into something new
Your garage is a space in your home that’s packed with potential. If it’s not working as a storage space, why not turn it into something new? Speak to a garage door company to get a new door to make it more secure and stylish and you could also look into getting a new internal door from your house directly into the space. Depending on how the space is looking (and your DIY skills!), you might need a professional to come in and do the transformation too. Some ideas of things you can change the space into include a home gym, a home cocktail bar, a dance studio, an art studio or a home office.
Create zones for different things
As well as the above, you could make your garage a useful space with more than one purpose. If you have more than enough space, you could have an area for storing your tools and perhaps a workbench where you can get things done. You could have an area for practising music or for your home gym equipment. Set out carefully separated zones for each different activities, this way it will be easier to keep it organized and looking how you want it to. Ensure you invest in plenty of storage and good lighting for projects!
Give it a makeover
Sometimes all it takes is a good makeover such as better flooring and lights to make the space able to be used. Clear out clutter, add in storage, repaint the walls and you will be surprised at how much space it feels like you have and what a nice space it is to be in now.
These are just a few things you can do that can turn your garage from a cluttered and unusable space into something that is actually useful. Your garage shouldn’t be viewed as a separate entity for your home, but rather part of it. By putting it into the same boat as your home, you will view it differently and be more likely to take care of it and put the same amount of work into it as you do the house itself. Once you’ve sorted through your garage and made it a useful space, you’ll wonder just why you didn’t do it sooner. What are some top tips you have that makes a garage a more useful space?
