If you’ve recently built a home with a metal roof, or made the switch and upgraded yours, you have likely discovered that metal roofs are the absolute right thing to buy. All across the country, homeowners and new home builders are discovering the benefits of metal roofs and are doubling down on their investment.
Metal roofs aren't, of course, a new invention. They’ve been around for years in the commercial or industrial arena and now they’re making their way into more and more residential homes. Perceptions are changing when it comes to metal roof systems but you do need to keep an eye on them to know the signs that your metal roof is in need of repair.
- Your roof is leaking. It happens to the best of them, but even metal roofs leak. You don't have to be a genius to know that a leaky roof of any material needs proper reparations by metal roof contractors. You can’t just patch this one up yourself, unless of course you’re a roofing expert - then have at it. When metal roofs leak, it shows that there is something wrong and you have to nip it in the bud as early as possible so that you don't have to worry about the entire thing caving in. Leaks can happen due to a variety of reasons and commonly, metal roofs leak due to improper installation or from the issues with snow and rain traveling to the underlay. Just because you don't necessarily hear the dripping of the water, doesn't mean that it’s not falling apart.
- There are loose panels. So, you’ve just finished the build and your home inspection is in progress, but you’ve noticed a loose panel on the roof. Metal roof panels will be very noticeable when they’re loose because they’ll shift or flap in the wind. Maybe you’ve noticed loosened nails or screws in your metal roof. Either way, there will be further damage after rain if you don't get that checked out and repaired ASAP. If the panels are not properly attached, there is going to be an issue keeping the elements out and no one wants to deal with the subsequent water damage, right?
- The finish sucks. Sorry to be blunt here, but you’re going to need a repair if the finish to your roof is awful to look at. If you’re spending the money on your home, you deserve to have the finish you paid for and it’s time you contacted a roofing contractor if you notice that your finish is damaged. If the finish is peeling off, the protective coating of your metal roof is removed and it can be susceptible to rust and corrosion.
- Your roof is rusting. A clear sign that your roof is coming to the end of its life is that you’re dealing with rust on the surface. It’s always a good idea to get it double checked by an expert who knows what they’re looking for. The best thing to do is speak to a roofing expert.
